The Barbado da Terceira is a medium-sized breed from the Portuguese Island of Terceira. It looks like a doodle – a labradoodle, goldendoodle, and barbadoodle – but unlike the doodles, it is a purebred dog that is bred for a purpose – to herd!

The Barbado da Terceira has a long history linked to the culture and traditions of the Portuguese Azores Islands. Known for its exceptional herding abilities, this breed has played a crucial role in preserving the island’s agricultural heritage. With its loyalty and trainability, the Barbado da Terceira has proven to be a valuable partner to the local shepherds and farmers. Disclaimer: She may put her paw down when it comes to herding emus.

In addition to its herding instincts, the Barbado da Terceira is a loyal one-person dog that also forms strong bonds with its entire family. It is protective and, if well-socialized, makes a great family member.

In 2021, the AKC included the breed in the Foundation Stock Service, allowing it to take part in AKC Open dog shows. This acknowledgment reflects the breed’s popularity and the efforts of dedicated enthusiasts working to preserve it. Club members aim to advance the breed to Miscellaneous status and ultimately to Full Recognition.

The BDT is an excellent companion for running and hiking due to its athleticism, energy, endurance, and sturdy build. When not exercising, it is content to be with its person.
